Who should attend Coding the Club?

Coded Matter(s) #5: Coding the Club. Is it for you? It may very well be! We have a diverse programme spanning professionals from multiple disciplines telling us about various aspects of their work. For your edification and information, we’ve listed a few types of people who will be sure to get full bang for their buck at Coding the Club!

“I’m a just curious raver.”
Good times! Our evening programme is accessible for an interested layman. We have a knowledgable moderator and lots of talks with visuals to illustrate just what the hell they’re talking about. The content of the evening focusses mostly on the processes behind of development and performance, not on heavy technicalities. So if you’re not into code or other such sorcery but are nonetheless curious about the people who make those great raving experience you have in the club, feel welcome! Also, Matthijs Munnik’s performance is a great experience which you usually don’t see in a club environment. Everybody likes trippy flashing lights.

“I organise parties and am looking for new input.”
Perfect! At Coding the Club, we’ll show the importance of new technologies and how they’re used to create interesting novel dance floor experiences. Especially the showcase by 4DSOUND and the artist talk by Simon Geilfus of ANTIVJ should give you great insights into new developments and the cutting edge of sound and visuals. Maybe even some inspiration for a next level design or concept for your own club night?

“I’m a maker/coder who wants to learn something new.”
We have that covered. For those interested in a somewhat more accessible workshop, Peter Kirn will be doing one about creating your own soundmakers with PureData and integrating them into various systems like Ableton Live or Android/iOS apps. Great for those who need some new unique sounds in their performance or who want to get creative with audio on a budget. PureData is free and open source!

Simon Geilfus of ANTIVJ will be teaching you how to benefit from live coding and how to integrate scripting into your creative workflow. He’ll also relate some practical cases where scripting has changed the way he works with code. In the second part of the workshop, you’ll be given a small and gentle introduction to Cinder without the hassle of learning specificities of the language or how to use an IDE (or: ‘Integrated Development Environment’) which are usually the main constraints when learning c++. Perfect for everyone who already has some experience with Processing, but wants to take the next step!

“I’m just a DJ/producer. What’s with all the visual data coding C+- mumbo jumbo?”
Hey now, no need to feel left out! There’ll also be talk about new kinds of controllers and soundmakers, especially by Peter Kirn. Also, it’s 2014, man! You’re going to want to look into those sweet new live shows everyone’s pumping out. Maybe you have an idea for your own performance to transcend the sullen level of moving your fader from left to right under a blasting un-synced strobe?

“I’m a visual artist, stage designer or do a media/design study.”
And you haven’t bought a ticket yet? At Coding the Club, some of the leading artists and performers in your field are going to lay bare the bones of how they work. If you haven’t heard of names such as Peter Kirn, Simon Geilfus and Children of the Light, click their names and find out why you should absolutely care!

Of course, there will also be time to informally meet people from other relevant fields and interests. Maybe some Coded Matter(s)-inspired new projects will arise on the spot? Who knows!

As you can see, there’s something for everyone at Coding the Club. Of course, above are just a few of the kinds of people who should attend, but we’re sure you’re probably pretty well informed and interested if you’ve read this far, right?

Cool! Be sure to get a ticket and we’ll see you on March 6th!
