Keynote: Perceptualization

Edwin van der Heide is an artist and researcher in the field of sound, space and interaction. He extends the terms composition and musical language into spatial, interactive and interdisciplinary directions. His work comprises installations, performances and environments. The audience is placed in the middle of the work and challenged to actively explore, interact and relate themselves to the artwork. At Extended Senses he will give an keynote lecture about the field of Perceptualization, which is connected to the course he’s teaching together with Maarten Lamers at the Media Technology MSc program at Leiden University. The term ‘perceptualization’ was coined specifically for this course. It describes the translation of signals and information to modalities that appeal to any of the human senses. As such, it generalises the terms ‘visualisation’ and ‘sonification’ to include all other senses. We study such perceptualisations, with particular focus on how properties of a perception systems can be used to optimally convey information. Theory, practice, history and examples of information perceptualisation are studied and discussed. Edwin van der Heide is a member of the scientific staff concerned with the Media Technology programme and research group.
